Baja Sur has everything from cruisy point breaks, to barreling beach breaks, and Trestles Esque cobblestone river mouth setups. The area works year-round, picking up both northwest and south swells, with many breaks at their best during the Northern Hemisphere winter.
November – Feb is the best time of year to score northwest swells. Cerritos can light up, especially Nov-Dec when combo swells produce peaks up and down the beach. Come late Dec/Jan larger NW swells create a fun right point off the headland and a left wedge that on its day can produce a crazy ramp that has been featured in a number of surf films over the years.
May – July is south swell season. Small days are great fun at Cerritos while larger swells are best spent exploring the east cape and the point breaks on the Pacific side. There are plenty of great waves to be had within a 1-2 hour radius of Chula.
Cerritos Beach, where Chula is located, is without a doubt, the most consistent spot in Southern Baja. Exposed to all swells it is almost never flat and always packs a punch. It is also the only wave in the area with protection from the NW winds that kick up in the afternoon. On top of that, it is also located within striking distance of the other premier waves in the area. Many days can be spent doing early morning surf missions followed by fun afternoon sessions at Cerritos.
San Pedrito, a 5 minute drive north of Chula is a consistent cobblestone rivermouth setup that offers A-Frame Peaks and the odd barrel. Best early mornings on combo or NW swells from Nov – March.
La Pastora, just north of Todos Santos lies La Pastora. Another rivermouth/cobblestone setup that while slightly fickle, is a regional classic on it’s day with powerful rights and lefts breaking close to the beach. Also best in the early mornings and on lower tides. Works in both the winter and summer swell seasons.
East Cape, a series of wrapping right points on the south east tip of the peninsula, with household names like Shipwrecks, 9 Palms, and Punta Perfecta. There is something for everyone on the East Cape, with cruisy waves ideal for longboarding, fishes, and novice/intermediate surfers to high speed, rippable walls for pointy thrusters. With the toll road we can get you to the start of the east cape in 1 hour from Chula, making this whole zone very accessible and a great option during south swell season from May – August.
Conejo, A cobblestone left pointbreak around 2.5 hours north of Chula that can provide some incredibly long walls when it’s on. It is truly a goofy footers paradise in a land of right points. Best on long period swell from the south but can work on WNW swell as well. Needs light winds.
Scorpion Bay, probably the most famous spot in all of Baja. San Juanico is a sight to behold when it’s on. A series of 4 flawless right points that stay offshore all day long. It does need a solid south swell to work, if you luck into one on your trip we can organize a strike mission to this legendary wave which is around 5.5 hrs north. Works best from May – August.
Other waves there are some lesser known spots that we have dialed in which can light up when the conditions align.
Soak up all the Baja Sur has to offer on a private surf tour with Chula as your home base.
Chula is located a quick 1 hour drive north of San Jose Del Cabo Airport at Cerritos beach, one of the most fun, accessible, and consistent surf spots in Southern Baja. SJD is a short flight from just about anywhere in the US and Canada, making the area one of the most painless trips to do if you are a North American looking for some fun waves, sun, and culture.
We are within striking distance of all of the best waves in Southern Baja, from the local breaks of Cerritos, Pedrito, and Pastora, to Conejo, the reeling right points of the east cape and the legendary Scorpion Bay.
Our team has been surfing and exploring this amazing peninsula for the better part of 3 decades and have a perfect blend of experience in hospitality, surf guiding/coaching, and professional cuisine to ensure you have an unforgettable trip.

I started going to down to Baja with my family as a teenager where I picked up the surfing bug surfing Cerritos and La Pastora with a few other groms that ended up becoming life long friends and a couple of which are my business partners in Chula!
I’ve seen the hospitality world from all angles being an avid traveller to surf camps and resorts across the map, working in tourism and hospitality for most of my 20s, and teaching surf lessons/coaching in Tofino, BC Canada.
I am a chef and surfer from BC, Canada with roots from France that has helped shaped my skill set in the kitchen.
I am passionate about using fresh locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that are not only delicous but also visually stunning. I take pride in my ability to tailor my menus to suit the tastes and dietary preferences of my clients, ensuring that every meal is unique and memorable experience.
My work history includes years of experience working at Tacofino Cantina Tofino and Miss Margarita in Byron Bay, Australia. As well as upscale private chefing in the Bahamas and in Miami, FL.
Hailing from the vibrant heart of Mexico City, Ama Escalante is a passionate adventurer with a love for all things ocean including surfing, diving, and fishing. She spends her days riding the waves and exploring the rich marine life of the region. Ama is dedicated to sharing the magic of Baja Sur with others, guiding them through its stunning beaches and hidden gems, while instilling a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and culture of this coastal paradise.
I am a local from Todos Santos, an avid surfer, chess player, and the architect/builder behind Chula Surf Lodge. Growing up here has given me a unique perspective on the culture, area, and waves. When I’m not at home surfing and working on projects I am usually out searching for waves in Mainland Mexico, Central America, and Indonesia.
The closest airport to Chula is San Jose Del Cabo (SJD) – an easy drive that is just over an hour via the airport toll road. Punch in Chula Surf Lodge on Google Maps (be sure to download the area if you don’t have data) and you will be guided right to us. It is recommended to rent a car and book in advance if possible.
